Okay, so to kick off this page I have the perfect article, actually I had a good article to lead off this page, but I am totally blown away that this article was published today. This article just might be the news article of the year.
The article is titled "Mark Zuckerberg is making a classic big Silicon Valley mistake---- one we last saw Marissa Mayer of Yahoo make".
The article can be found on the BUSINESS INSIDER web site. The author is Avery Hartman. https://www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerberg-metaverse-bet-similar-to-marissa-mayer-yahoo-2022-10 is the link to the article.
I have not read the article just yet, but I know it is going to be great. There is a problem with the article, and I can say that without having yet read the article. I know for a fact that Meta aka Facebook "YAHOO MOMENT" is approximately four weeks away, given that today is 10/11/2022.
As to how I know that the Meta's aka Facebook "YAHOO MOMENT" is four weeks away? Well that for the moment is a secret.
While the author of the article is not the first to suggest that Meta aka Facebook is having a Yahoo Moment, it is the loudest shout to date.
Okay, lets pick through this article and see what we can glean from its content. Well to open this one sided discussion, the article is show a side by side portraits of both Mark Zuckerberg and Marissa Mayer. Well, having researched both individuals extensively, it is not a true comparison. In my opinion Mark Zuckerberg is my pick for the intellectual winner, not even a contest. Mark Zuckerberg has proven foresight, which is something Marissa May did not have. While she is a brilliant person the problem she faced steering the massive vessel that Yahoo was there was only one direction a sinking vessel will go. I am in no way saying that Yahoo could not have been saved and made whole. It broke my heart to see what could have been a Trillion Dollar Corporation sell for a paulty five-billion dollars. Then to be packaged with the remains of AOL and sold for less. Marissa Mayer did not stand a chance. If only she would have.
While the article goes on about the failures of Marissa Mayer and blatantly claims Mark Zuckerberg is making the same mistakes that Marissa Mayer made at Yahoo, I don't see it to be so.
The articles author goes on to list the struggles of Meta aka Facebook, manufacturing VR headsets, social media platforms to grow, and advertising dollars to recoup. I fail to see the difficulties of manufacturing a known product. As to growing the social media platform, that is not a problem. Then when it is suggested that advertising dollars can be recouped, I fail to understand how advertising dollars can be recouped.
Dear Avery Hartman, time as we know it is lineur. Any point in time that has past, means that any opportunities that may have existed in the past, is lost. Gone, Goodbye, So long, Adios, Arrivederci and Do Svidaniya. You can however work today so that when tomorrow comes you can earn income, but any opportunity today and yesterday is already lost. In my opinion. "Linear time is a concept whereby time is seen sequentially, as a series of events that are leading toward something: beginning, and an end. In Newtonian theory it is something absolute in reality, regardless of human perception." Now, unless you are buddies with Tom Terrific who could hook us up with Professor Peabody and we could use his Way Back Machine I can see no way to recoup advertising dollar lost yesterday. That is just my opinion.
I might suggest that anyone interested in reading a fairly accurate history of Yahoo and its evolution Nicholas Carlson authored MARISSA MAYER AND THE FIGHT TO SAVE YAHOO. But, it is far from the whole story. Despite the thoughts of many Yahoo is far from dead and, it still is worth a trillion dollars.
The article's author points out that Meta aka Facebook lost $10 billion on its metaverse efforts in 2021. And, that Mark Zuckerberg informed shareholders that this would be the trend for the next three to five years. Well, I do admire his courage. But I am sure many are ready to boil pitch and gather feathers for an after hours party for the CEO of Meta, aka Facebook.
As to my thoughts on the metaverse that Mr. Zuckerberg is creating. I have yet to don a VR device and truly enter the new space. Nor do I understand or comprehend the landscape. Until I do, it is impossible for me to form an opinion. I do not know if Moore's Law applies to the growth of the metaverse. I wonder what my avatar would appear as. Most likely I would appear much like Yoda in his later years. Silent you must be, dangerous I am.
I believe in Mr. Zuckerberg's ambitions for the future. After all, did he not create Facebook and then took it mobile successfully? Now he wants to raise Meta, aka Facebook to the next level above the internet landscape. Oh ye doubters and naysayers. The man is wanting to take Meta, aka Facebook where no one has gone before and colonize the region. Where oh where is your sense of adventure? Imagine being there first and the opportunities that lay waiting.
Yes, from those I have questioned / interviewed I have learned that the social platform, Meta, aka Facebook, has lost its appeal to some. Enthusiasm has waned from what it once was. I can still remember seeing long lines of individuals waiting to enter Internet Cafes just to have the opportunity to create a Facebook account. It was truly considered to be a status symbol in some countries.
But today, TIK TOK is all the rage. Today I heard Peter Mckinnon refer to what he termed Doom Scrolling. I almost fell out of my chair laughing. I knew exactly what he was saying. Individuals scrolling endlessly to get that dopamine hit.
Will the Meta, aka Facebook social platform survive? I am going to say yes.
Will Meta, aka Facebook conquer the metaverse? Again, I am going to say yes.
Has Meta, aka Facebook had its Yahoo Moment? No, not as of this date, 10/13/2022. But the moment is coming soon, very soon.
I would like to thank Avery Hartman for the article she has published and Business Insider. I encourage everyone to visit Business Insider. There is a ton of very insightful articles published there most every day.
In no way should that which I have published here be considered a slight to anyone, least of all Avery Hartman. I found Avery Hartmans article extremely invigorating and timely.
I am asking myself if I could or should do an article or a book about Yahoo, the rise and fall of Yahoo. In the future I may touch upon the matter only. All things considered, Yahoo! is not dead yet. But, could it resurrect itself? The actual trillion dollar value is still there. It is possible, but not probable. Time will tell.
