So much is being reported and written about Artificial Intelligence today describing the advancements being made and its rapid development. I am not an expert in the field, that I will both readily admit and am attesting to. But I do know a few facts about it. But I will dive deeper into that later.
Many individuals today write and or speak about the dangers / fears of developing intelligence via "machine learning" thereby producing what today is commonly known as Artificial Intelligence , to being greater than that of human beings. Okay, so am guessing at this point in time, that ship has already sailed. Bon Voyage!
It has been my personal experience that during my years on this planet, of which I have spent all, I have met many individuals that would, to some degree or another, benefit from artificial intelligence. Just saying.
As to what the dangers of developing Artificial Intelligence are I do not know, and neither does anyone else. Many can and do, at this point, only speculate. So, therein awaits the danger.
Developing Artificial Intelligence is not the first time a possibly devastating human race annihilating project has been undertaken. Might you recall The Manhattan Project, undertaken by J. Robert Oppenheimer, an American theoretical physicist who led the team that constructed the device. Not he or his team knew what would happen as the countdown ticked down to zero. And what was it he stated after the artificial sun they created went nova? “Now I am become Death, the Destroyer of worlds”. Who will say what, when the Artificial Intelligence Genie is loose from its bottle?
If Artificial Intelligence is or is not a good thing or a bad thing will be determined by who controls Artificial Intelligence and for what purpose it is used. But is that not the case for most everything.
Knives, firearms, explosives, motorized vehicles, ships, aircraft, rockets, nuclear power, scientific research, while are all a beneficial and useful to humans, they can be used for other purposes that are not so good for humans.
When one is given a hammer, is it not common nature to search for nails to strike?
Give a deranged human access to Weapons of Mass Destruction such as explosives, nuclear devices, or a lethal virus and humans / the human race could be in jeopardy.
As to the question of if or not Artificial Intelligence will be good or bad for mankind, well it all depends on who possess it and what it is used for.
But, to share with you my expertise about Artificial Intelligence. Take a moment and think about all that we have today. What did Artificial Intelligence contribute to what we have now?
Did Artificial Intelligence build or assist those who constructed any of the ancient Pyramids of Egypt, or the modern day pyramids of today's internet like Apple, Microsoft, AOL, Yahoo!, Google aka Alphabet, or Facebook aka Meta? Nope.
Did Artificial Intelligence come forward with the idea or assist with the USA of putting men on the moon? Nope.
In my mind Artificial Intelligence is just another tool humans have developed to help the human race to achieve more than we have yet discovered that we need.
But Artificial Intelligence is here and any individual with a modicum of intellect can deduce that one can never put all the toothpaste back in the tube once it has been pushed out.
It is my hope that both Human Intelligence (HI) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) can peacefully evolve and coexist.
Never underestimate Human Intelligence (HI), because Human Intelligence conceived and is developing Artificial Intelligence, for better or worse, it exists, therefore it is. You be the judge.
